Career and College Readiness

We are committed to ensuring all youth across the Greater Washington region complete high school ready for career and post-secondary education or training.

This includes increasing the four-year high school graduation rate for all students, increasing competency in math and English language arts, and having meaningful work experiences while still in school. This outcome helps determine a young person’s successful transition to adulthood and a happy, healthy, thriving life.

Our Capital Kids Report estimated that approximately 200,000 youth, ages 0–24, are experiencing disconnection from formal academic instruction or the workforce, reflecting an estimated 25% increase over pre-pandemic numbers.

Career and College Readiness
We seek to:
  • Improve the four-year high school graduation rates across the region, starting in Washington, DC, Fairfax, and Prince George’s County, especially for the Latino and African American boys who have the lowest graduation rates

  • Reconnect youth who are off track for graduation or have dropped out of school and/or the workforce

  • Create a shared definition for ‘Career and College Readiness’ and work to ensure that every jurisdiction reaches it within our region

  • Work with collective impact networks to catalyze change within systems that fail to support young people of color, including tracking disaggregated data to ensure equity goals and outcomes accountability
